Ranveer Singh’s film opens with a dedication to pioneering Indian hip-hop stars Naezy and Divine, Akhtar and co-writer Reema Kagti. The story has a background borrowing specifics from their lives.
Ranveer Singh allowed many local rappers show up. They came as themselves, which is a delight. Yet Gully Boys doesn’t try toexplain the music itself. What draws these hungry young men to the righteous aggression of Nas and Tupac and Jay-Z is this subculture from other rebellions.
Starring Ranveer Singh in the role of a street rapper as Murad, Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy has hit the screens. Akhtar has said that the film is a work of fiction, but she was inspired by the story of underground rappers Divine and Naezy. Alongside Singh, the film also stars Alia Bhatt,
Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz was fantastic . By the end, I was wiping tears and cheering furiously not just for Murad but for each one of these characters to find happiness. Even his abusive father.
That’s the magic of this film. I’m going with four stars.
